TREASURER RUSSELL APPLAUDS NEW LAW STRENGTHENING THE CONNECTICUT FIREFIGHTERS CANCER RELIEF FUND
HARTFORD, Connecticut – Connecticut State Treasurer Erick Russell today applauded the passage and signing of Senate Bill 1426, which strengthens the Connecticut Firefighters Cancer Relief Fund by expanding coverage and ensuring greater access for all firefighters in the state.
“Firefighters put their lives on the line every day, and it’s essential that we provide them with the support they need when faced with the potentially devastating impact of cancer,” said Treasurer Russell. “This legislation will help to ensure that all firefighters, whether employed by state or municipal fire departments, have access to vital resources and protections.
“Safeguarding and growing the Firefighters Cancer Relief Fund is one of the great responsibilities and privileges of the Office of the Treasurer. We will continue to work alongside Governor Lamont and the legislature to ensure these brave men and women have the support they deserve.”
The Connecticut Firefighters Cancer Relief Fund, managed by the State Treasurer’s Office, was established in 2016 to provide financial assistance to firefighters diagnosed with cancers related to their profession. The Fund currently holds a balance of $8.2 million and has paid out over $866,000 to help firefighters cover medical expenses, treatment costs, and other related needs.
The newly signed legislation expands coverage to include skin cancer and clarifies that all firefighters—regardless of whether they work for a state or municipal department—are eligible for support through the Fund. These updates will ensure that more firefighters across Connecticut can access critical financial assistance when diagnosed with cancer related to their profession.
