Promoting Safe Driving for Older Americans Month

WETHERSFIELD, CT – In celebration of Older Americans Month, the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) wants to highlight programs and services tailored for older motorists. These offerings include insurance discounts, driving courses, and a two-year driver’s license renewal term.

Connecticut motorists who are at least 60 years old are eligible to receive an insurance discount of at least five percent after successfully completing a DMV-approved accident prevention course. These courses serve as a refresher for more experienced drivers and yield at least a five-percent discount on automobile insurance premiums for a minimum of two years.

Courses address Connecticut laws and regulations, drowsiness behind the wheel, distractions, how to overcome challenges caused by health issues and a host of other important topics. Many of the courses can be accessed and completed online making it convenient for the driver to enhance their skillset. To find an approved course provider, visit ct.gov/dmv.

“Older drivers generally have lots of experience navigating through different situations on the road,” said DMV Commissioner Tony Guerrera. “It’s important to recognize their experience while also addressing any potential challenges they may face. With the help of these accident prevention courses, we can arm older motorists with the tools they need to drive with confidence.”

Additionally, motorists aged 65 or older can request a two-year driver’s license renewal instead of the standard six or eight year term.
